All Wave Westlife Farewell

I fell some small attachment to the Irish boyband as they started in pop about the same time I started in journalism.

And I've watched the mevery step of the way.

By which I mean I went to the press conference in Ireland when Brian McFadden quit and I can hum Flying Without Wings.

Forty-five million sales later and the lads are doing a last mega tour.

So, bolstered with beer, I settled down at London O2 arena to soak up their show.

After some epic buildup music, a blas sheet dropped to reveal four burning effigies of the lads, drawing gasps from the crowd.

But it was all OK - the lights flashed on and our heroes stool bold, chins held high as the audience too was illuminated.

Four men - definitely a manband rather than a boyband - beheld an ecstatic sea of fat women.

And what I believe to have been a Thai bride.

Then... BANG! - they were straight in with What About Now - a mildly melancholic, midtempo ballad with a key change and a slightly questioning, apologetic tone. The crowd relished the invite to sing along, almost drowning out Shane Filan - surely the best vocalist in the band.

In the second song the band drove their fans into a frenzy by taking two magnificent steps down a large staircase and launching into What Makes A Man.

It's a mildly melancholic, mid-tempo ballad with a key change and a slightly, apologetic tone.

The crowd were invited to sing along and it became clear that if Shane ever lost his voice, the live show would have to be cancelled.

Women of all ages and one sizes were waving their arms in the air, singing and crying. One near me became almost hysterical when the third song kicked in - My Love, a mildly melancholic, mid-tempo ballad with a key change and a slightly questioning, apologetic tone.

I think you get the picture.

They did all their hits plus a few covers - Sex On Fire by Kings Of Leon was rather good.

And of course they said goodbye to us.

Until the next time - I don't soubt.
